The music program at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin is creative, diverse and grounded in the Anglican heritage of music in the Episcopal Church. The main mission of the music at Saint Mary's is to support the liturgy of the church.

In addition to our Eucharistic celebrations, we have many other musical, liturigcal events that have become the S. Mary's tradition and opportunities to join other churches in song and voice.

  • Advent Lessons & Carols in  usually on the first Sunday of Advent.
  • Christmas Lessons & Carols on the Sunday following Christmas.
  • Epiphany Lessons & Carols with the churches in the Falmouth Ecumenical Network.
  • We hold the Saint Mary Schola Concerts during Advent and Lent.
  • St. Fransis of Assisi Evensong with the Blessing of the Animals in October.

We are very forutnate and honored to have Bruce Fithian join the Saint Mary's family in September 2007 as Orgainist/Choirmaster.  Bruce brings to Saint Mary's international stature as a musician. A Full Professor of Music at the University of Southern Maine since 1996, he earned his Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he received the Chadwick Medal for most outstanding graduate. While pursuing his MFA in music composition from Brandeis University, he was awarded the prestigious Leonard Bernstein Composition Fellowship at Tanglewood.

A highly-proficient organist and pianist, Bruce's first love is in choral music, both conducting and performing. He has been tenor soloist at Lincoln Center in New York, the Boston Handel and Haydn Society, Carnegie Hall, and throughout Europe. His résumé is about the size of the Manhattan Yellow Pages, and is available for your perusal on request! He excels as a choral director, with a particular gift for blending voices in a volunteer and community choir setting. One committee member who heard him direct a vocal concert commented that he made forty-five mostly untrained voices sound like one hundred fifty professionals. Those who know and have worked with Bruce speak to his utter commitment and dedication to offering the best quality music possible. During his discussions with our Search Committee, Bruce also spoke about using Saint Mary's as a venue for recitals and concerts for and with the wider community, thus bringing more people into our beautiful and sacred space. These are all gifts that will surely serve Saint Mary's well.

Bruce also brings to us a deep spirituality, speaking of music as a great vehicle for communicating the presence of God and the deepening of one's faith.
